They would run alongside the carriage and often among the horses. They guarded the carriage and horses while the owner was away. Of course, they were used as mascots for fire halls, as circus performers, and as war sentinels. Other uses included a vermin hunter, hound, shepherd and guard dog.

Many people say that this breed originated in Yugoslavia. However, in the 1700, a Bengal pointer, similar to this very breed existed in England which adds to the disagreement. During the Middle Ages, they were used as hounds afterwards, during the 1800s, they were used as guard dogs for carriages.
